HISTORY:
In Spring of 2007, the Northern Highlands E-Waste Program was established by Derek D’Anna and Brian Halpin to help the community properly dispose of their electronic waste. This program has collected 100,000 pounds of e-waste to date which has been recycled by a company we use called Supreme Assest Management Recovery (SAMR) in Lakewood, NJ. They have a zero electronic landfill policy.

MISSION:
In the state of New Jersey, effective as of January 1, 2011, The Electronic Waste Management Act says, "no person shall knowingly dispose of a used covered electronic device in bulky trash", it must be recycled. The need to properly recycle and dispose of electronic waste is necessary now more than ever. The volume of obsolete electronics has increased with the rapid pace of technology. Electronic equipment contains lead, mercury, and cadmium. If they are not disposed of properly these toxins can wind up in our land and waterways.
The Northern Highlands students' primary goal is to continue to educate the public and students in local high schools about the importance of disposing of their electronic waste legally and safely. We plan to communicate to them through internet postings on our local municipality websites, such as: town halls, libraries, elementary and middle schools; as well as our home page. Our program's target audience are the residents of our local community being Allendale, Upper Saddle River, Ho-Ho-Kus, and Saddle River, as well as other residents located in Bergen County. We plan to reach them through our announcements in our local town paper for several weeks prior to the collection date, and also through a posting in our High School student newspaper coupled with fliers and posters that will be distributed.
In the past, our program has received financial support through the Bergen County Utilities Authority Environmental Awareness Challenge Grant, and our goal in 2013 is to apply for this grant again to help fund the 2014 E-Waste collection.
